The one idea
Being the only human on the planet is a recent and strange situation. For roughly two million years, several human species lived at the same time. Some were tall, some barely a meter high, some big-brained, some with brains the size of a chimp’s. They made tools, controlled fire, and buried their dead. Only in about the last 40,000 years has Homo sapiens been alone.
The science
The old textbook picture was a single file line. An ape straightens up, the brain swells, and you arrive at modern humans. That picture is wrong. The human family tree is a branching bush, not a trunk, and for most of the past two million years multiple branches were alive at once.
We know this two ways. The first is fossils. On the Indonesian island of Flores, remains found in 2004 (Homo floresiensis, the “hobbit”) belonged to adults about one meter tall with brains in the chimpanzee range. They still made stone tools and hunted, and they may have survived until around 50,000 years ago. Homo naledi, found in a deep South African cave in 2013, had a brain of only about 450–600 cubic centimeters, yet its bones were deposited deep in a hard-to-reach chamber, which several researchers read as deliberate disposal of the dead. Homo luzonensis, named from Philippine cave deposits in 2019, is another small, island-evolved branch with an odd mix of ancient and modern traits. Alongside these sat Homo erectus, which lasted nearly two million years in Asia, the Neanderthals in Europe and western Asia (~400,000 to ~40,000 years ago), and the Denisovans.
The second way we know is ancient DNA, and this is the part that genuinely rewired the field. When the Neanderthal genome was sequenced in 2010, it showed that people outside Africa carry roughly 1–2% Neanderthal DNA. The Denisovans are even stranger. We have almost no bones, just a finger bone, a jaw, and a few teeth, yet we have a high-quality genome, and their DNA lives on in present-day Melanesians and Aboriginal Australians (up to ~5%). One Denisovan gene variant helps Tibetans breathe at high altitude. We are partly reconstructing extinct humans from the genomes of living people. Our species didn’t simply replace the others. Where they met, they interbred.
A note on where the source leans poetic. Brain size is not a reliable index of “smartness,” but the claim that small-brained naledi clearly buried its dead and clearly used fire is still actively debated rather than settled, so treat it as a strong, contested hypothesis and not a fact. Exact extinction dates also remain open, as do the reasons the other humans vanished, whether climate, competition, disease, or genetic absorption.
What this changes about how you picture reality
Most of us carry a quiet assumption that we are the point, the finish line evolution was running toward. The bushy tree dissolves that. Homo sapiens is about 300,000 years old. Homo erectus lasted nearly two million. Neanderthals held Ice Age Europe for around 350,000 years. By the only test that has run so far, which is endurance, we are the newcomers rather than the champions, and we have not yet earned our seniority.
There’s a second, more intimate shift. The other humans aren’t fully gone. Pieces of them are inside most people now, in immune genes, altitude genes, and skin-pigment genes that natural selection kept because they worked. “Pure lineage” turns out to be a fiction. Every genome is a mosaic, and genetic variation within any population dwarfs the variation between populations. The honest awe here isn’t that we won. It’s that we were one experiment among many, that we mingled with the others rather than simply conquering them, and that we are the branch that happens to still be holding a leaf, for now.

Leading with the object works because the size gap hits the gut before any argument does. These were people, this small, making tools. Let the room sit with the photograph for a beat before anyone talks.

- Most people in this room carry DNA from humans who went extinct tens of thousands of years ago. Does knowing that change how the word “human” feels?
- Homo erectus lasted nearly two million years, and we’ve lasted three hundred thousand. By that measure, what would it even mean to call ourselves “successful”?
- Why do you think the story we were taught was a single ladder instead of a branching bush? What’s appealing about the ladder version?
- The reasons the other humans disappeared are still genuinely uncertain. Are you comfortable sitting with “we don’t fully know,” or does the open question itch?

Keep three uncertainty flags honest in the room. The naledi burial-and-fire claims are contested. The exact survival dates for floresiensis and naledi are provisional. The causes of the other humans’ extinction are unresolved. State these as live debates, not settled history.
