Life has come within reach of total collapse at least five times. The Permian "Great Dying" erased roughly 96% of marine species. Each near-ending cleared the stage for what came next, including us. We are here because the dinosaurs died.

The one idea

Five times in the last half-billion years, most of the species alive on Earth were wiped out in a geological blink. The worst was the Permian-Triassic “Great Dying” 252 million years ago, which killed an estimated 96% of marine species and the majority of life on land. But extinction isn’t only the eraser at the end of a story. It’s the editor that decides which story gets written next. After each catastrophe, the survivors inherited an empty world and radiated into it. Mammals stayed small and marginal for over 150 million years. Then an asteroid removed the dinosaurs and handed them the planet. We exist because that catastrophe happened.

The science

There have been five “big” mass extinctions in the fossil record, and paleontologists call them the “Big Five.” Each one is defined by an abrupt, global crash in the number of species. The oldest is the Ordovician-Silurian (~443 million years ago), which lost ~85% of species to glaciation and a falling sea level. The Late Devonian (~375 mya) lost ~75%, tied to ocean oxygen depletion. The Permian-Triassic “Great Dying” (~252 mya) took ~96% of marine species and ~70% of land vertebrate families, the worst in Earth’s history. The Triassic-Jurassic (~201 mya) lost ~80%. The Cretaceous-Paleogene (~66 mya) lost ~75%, including every non-bird dinosaur. We know these happened because the rock record shows it directly. Layer after layer of fossils, then a sharp boundary where whole groups vanish at once, then a depleted world above it.

For the two headliners, we even know the murder weapon with real confidence. The Great Dying lines up with the Siberian Traps, one of the largest volcanic events ever, which flooded an area the size of a continent with lava and, more importantly, belched enormous volumes of carbon dioxide and other gases. That drove rapid global warming, ocean acidification, and oxygen-starved seas, a cascade that nearly sterilized the oceans. The dinosaur-ending extinction has an even sharper fingerprint. A worldwide layer of iridium (rare on Earth’s surface, common in asteroids), shocked quartz, and tiny glass droplets all point to the Chicxulub impact, a roughly 10-kilometer asteroid that struck what is now the Yucatán in Mexico. The debris it threw up triggered global firestorms and an “impact winter” of darkened skies and collapsed food chains. (Massive volcanism in India, the Deccan Traps, was also underway and likely made things worse, but the impact was the decisive blow.) There is a throughline in all of this. Most great extinctions are driven by how fast the climate and ocean chemistry change, not by the change itself. Life adapts to slow shifts. It is sudden ones that kill at scale.

What this changes about how you picture reality

We tend to imagine the history of life as a steady climb, simple to complex, lower to higher, building toward us. The extinction record says something far stranger and more humbling. Life’s history is punctuated, not progressive. It is long stretches of stability shattered by catastrophes that don’t care how well-adapted you are. The dinosaurs weren’t failures. They ruled the planet for over 150 million years and were ended by a rock from space, not by being outcompeted. And here is the part that’s hard to sit with cleanly. We owe our entire existence to that disaster. No Chicxulub, no opening for mammals, no primates, no us. Our presence is built directly on top of one of the worst days in the history of the planet. That reframes “extinction” from a tragedy at the edge of the story to the central mechanism of the story, the editor that keeps clearing the page. It also lands a quiet warning. The thing that did the killing, again and again, was the speed of change. We are now changing the climate and ocean chemistry at a rate that, in the rock record, is the signature of a mass extinction. The same physics that erased 96% of marine life doesn’t know or care that we’re the ones running the experiment this time.

Two ways to see it

  • The timeline (the “rhythm of catastrophe” frame): A single horizontal deep-time timeline, 540 million years long, with the five extinctions marked as sharp vertical drops in biodiversity. Each one is a cliff, followed by a slow recovery climbing back up. This is the room’s anchor image. Seeing all five at once makes the core point wordlessly. Life doesn’t decline gently. It falls off cliffs and re-climbs. Mark “you are here” at the far right, tiny and recent, then put a faint sixth tick at the present to provoke the obvious question.
  • The two crime scenes (the “we know how” frame): Side by side, the Siberian Traps (continent-scale lava, the carbon-and-warming weapon behind the Great Dying) and the Chicxulub impact (the crater, the global iridium layer, the impact winter). Naming each one as evidence shows the room that these aren’t just stories. They’re conclusions forced by physical clues in the rock. One killed by slow-motion volcanic poisoning of the oceans. The other killed in an afternoon from the sky. Same outcome, most of life gone, by two completely different routes.
  • (Optional third, to sharpen the debate): Hold the framing of the present moment against the past. Many biologists argue that we are in a sixth mass extinction right now, driven by humans (habitat loss, climate change, ocean acidification). Some scientists say current extinction rates already rival the Big Five in trajectory. Others caution that we are early and the total loss so far is not yet at “Big Five” magnitude. Naming this live, genuine disagreement keeps the session honest and pulls the deep past into the present.

  • The dinosaurs were not “failures.” They dominated Earth for over 150 million years and were ended by an asteroid, not by being outcompeted. Does that change how you think about what “success” even means for a species, including ours?
  • We exist because the dinosaurs died. How does it feel to know your entire lineage depends on one of the worst catastrophes in the planet’s history?
  • Each of these extinctions was driven mostly by how fast the climate and oceans changed, not by the change itself. We are now changing both very fast. Does that sit differently than abstract “climate change” usually does?
  • Scientists genuinely disagree about whether we’re in a sixth mass extinction right now. If the answer is “yes, and it’s us,” what does that responsibility feel like? If it’s “too early to say,” does that reassure you or not?
  • Life has come back from losing 96% of marine species. Every time, the survivors refilled the world. Is that mostly comforting (life is resilient) or mostly unsettling (the recovery took millions of years, and “we” might not be among the survivors)?
  • Ninety-nine percent of all species that ever lived are already extinct. If extinction is the normal fate of nearly everything, what, if anything, do you think we should be trying to preserve, and why?

Two small calibrations are worth saying to the room. (1) For the dinosaur extinction, the asteroid is the decisive cause, but the Deccan Traps volcanism in India was also underway and likely contributed, so it isn’t purely “asteroid vs. nothing.” (2) The Book elsewhere (“Cambrian Explosion,” L3260–3270) frames the Cambrian as where body plans appeared. That’s a radiation, not an extinction, so don’t let the room conflate the two. The “five extinctions” are the Big Five. A frequently discussed “sixth” is the present, human-driven one, which is contested in scale.
