The precise version (Watch)

Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime curvature, propagating outward from accelerating massive objects at the speed of light. They were predicted by Einstein in 1916 from his general field equations. The waves manifest as a strain h, a fractional change in distance, expressed as h = ΔL/L. For the first detected event (GW150914, detected September 14, 2015) LIGO measured a peak strain of approximately h ≈ 10⁻²¹. The stretching and squeezing is quadrupolar. One spatial axis stretches while the perpendicular axis squeezes, then vice versa, in the two polarization states (+ and ×). The source of GW150914 was a binary black hole merger approximately 1.3 billion light-years away.

If it wobbles

Confidently wrong — Don't debate the number. Pull up the two-detector overlay. 'Both sites caught the same chirp, 7 ms apart. What would explain that other than a wave crossing the Earth?'
Dead silence — Make it physical. 'Hold your arms 4 km apart. Now move them by a thousandth of a proton. That's what we measured. Sit with how absurd that is, and that it worked.'
Runaway debate — Pull back to the still. 'Let's look at what the instrument actually recorded before we argue about what it means.'
Tipping into dogma — Name it plainly. 'We're not here to settle what spacetime ultimately is. We're here to sit with the fact that it moves.'
