Einstein's equivalence principle (1907) states that the effects of gravity are locally indistinguishable from those of uniform acceleration. An observer in a closed box cannot determine, through any local experiment, whether the box is at rest in a gravitational field or accelerating through empty space at g = 9.8 m/s². Conversely, an observer in free fall locally experiences weightlessness equivalent to an inertial frame. Einstein described this as his "happiest thought." This principle is the cornerstone of general relativity and led directly to the prediction that gravity must bend light and slow clocks.
